Visit Your Podiatrist at Great Neck Podiatry to Eliminate Foot Odor

What causes foot odor?

Foul odor in your feet is typically produced by bacteria and/or fungus that grows in the shoes and attaches to the skin. The bacteria actually eats away at the top layer of skin, which in turn produces a foul odor. Foot odor can also be caused by conditions like anemia (low red blood cell count) or hyperthyroidism. Feet also have more sweat glands than any other part of the body, so they can sweat profusely which may not always be able to evaporate due to being enclosed in your shoes.

How to prevent foot odor?

First and foremost: personal hygiene. Hygiene is very important to help prevent many things, including foot odor. That means that feet should be washed daily with soap and water. Afterwards, it’s just as important to use clean, dry socks. Here are a some other tips to help prevent foot odor from occurring in the first place:

  • Try using antiperspirant or deodorant
  • Wear shoes that allow your feet to breathe well
  • Watch what you eat

How can I treat foot odor?

Aside from taking the above preventive measures, you can always try over-the-counter medications in an effort to reduce foot odor. However, if those fail to reduce the odor Dr. Lance Greiff can help in alleviating your foot odor through medicated solutions.
